"El médico jefe del Departamento de Neurocirugía del Hospital de las Fuerzas Armadas Cirujano Guzmán, Bernardo Chávez, escribió un libro sobre el manejo del traumatismo encéfalo craneano, que le ha valido el reconocimiento de colegas de la especialidad de muchos países donde actualmente se vende el texto de consulta, como Colombia, Argentina, Brasil, Estados Unidos y Uruguay.
Chávez recibirá hoy el premio al “mejor trabajo científico”, otorgado por la Universidad de Valparaíso, casa de estudios que financió el libro a través de fondos especiales a los que postuló el profesional.
El libro, denominado “Evaluación y manejo avanzado en neurotrauma craneal”, ha sido calificado por los expertos como texto único, ya que hace 34 años no se publicaba nada sobre este tema.
El doctor Chávez contó que este libro, compilado por la Universidad de Valparaíso Editorial, nació a partir de la tesis que defendió para titularse en la especialidad de neurocirujano, trabajo dirigido por el doctor Antonio Orellana, jefe de la cátedra de Neurocirugía de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Valparaíso y jefe del Servicio de Neurocirugía del Hospital Carlos van Buren de esa ciudad.
Bernardo Chávez ejerce la medicina hace 11 años, dos de los cuales los ha pasado en Punta Arenas.
El 70 por ciento del contenido total del libro corresponde a la tesis universitaria. Académicos le propusieron mejorar el contenido con el apoyo de profesionales extranjeros y académicos nacionales.
Chávez demoró cinco años en elaborar el texto final, tres de los cuales los pasó preparando la tesis y dos en el libro.
Al mercado salieron mil ejemplares, de los cuales solamente 100 se vendieron en Chile y el resto en el extranjero. En Uruguay lo tomaron como texto guía en unidades de terapia intensiva para los pacientes afectados por un Tec.
Esto último cobra relevancia como tema de salud pública, dada la cantidad de accidentes automovilísticos que dejan mortalidad y secuelas neurológicas".
